I just tried dogpile. I entered my name and got 76 hits. On Google, I
got "about 18000." Yahoo gave me 2150 hits and Ask.com gave 1980. The
same text entered the same way varies wildly, so I would use Google long
before I would use dogpile.

Heresy! Burn him at the stake!
I work at Google as a tech writer...
I think this is a good idea. Every search engine will have its own
strengths and weaknesses. Also, regardless of the search, be specific as
possible, look for exact phrases, and try some synonyms. Alas, the more
you know about a subject, the better your search will be! If you know
absolutely nothing, try a very broad search and then look through the
top results, even if they aren't exactly what you want. By digging
deeper, you may learn enough to make a good search.
