The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I use shift+enter to avoid adding paragraph spacing, for example, like the
Name and Address example in the quoted message and to break a line but
retain numbering and paragraph formatting in rare cases where styles are not
effective. An example could include a glossary item where the term is flush
left and followed by the defintion, but the second and subsequent lines are
indented. Sometimes a definition may require more than one paragraph but
creating a new paragraph can create errors because the lines are not kept
together and the subsequent paragraph is not the same style as the term.
Although, retention of line numbering is my primary reason for using a line
break (shift+enter) rather than a paragraph.
