Thus the very reason for my statement.

I'm a realist.

There is no real way to verify the validity of any LinkedIn contact,
therefor no real method for validating the claim of an endorsement.
Since the internet is an unfortunate realm of scam (at least in
perception) the level of trust is rather low.

Sure, they may get caught, eventually. But tracking a LinkedIn
contact vs. a papered Letter of Recommendation body? The body on
paper is much easier to find and verify. Would you honestly give your
phone number on LinkedIn???

My point is simply this.

I do write endorsements for LinkedIn...they cannot hurt. However, I
do not think they will NOT make or break a job deal.

If you have the opportunity to get a Letter of Recommendation? Get it.

This is one great example of paper being thicker than data.

The people who give endorsements are listed by name and company. Presumably they don't want to endorse someone who might later embarrass them.

I suppose someone could create fictitious endorsements (or pay into your PayPal account!), but they would run a great risk of exposure eventually.

Am I missing something?
