very often, on my way out the door, I'll discretely ask my manager or
another manager that I've worked closely with, "Can I use you as a
reference?"
Either I have their personal contact information already (probably cell
number) or I'll follow the question with, "Where can I always reach you?"
....
With few exceptions, I have always left a company on good terms and with
excellent letters of recommendation. I may have been lucky, but I usually
have a great relationship with my immediate manager and even upper
management, and I offer to help my replacement find things and get rolling.
I also ask for the letter at the same time I hand in my resignation letter.
