The convention I have always seen is that "page x of y" numbering
is *only* used with consecutive front-to-back page numbering. The
purpose of that form of numbering is to reassure the reader that
every page of the document is present and accounted for. By
convention, the second number is *always* the total page count
including front matter and back matter (47 in your case), and this
dictates continuous, consecutive page numbering because that
the only thing that makes sense.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel (although corporate style
agree with me on this)

Hello again. The original problem is solved. I inherited this document, and probably a couple of people had worked on it before, using slightly different techniques that probably confused Word. I went through it rigorously, straightening out inconsistencies of various sorts, and the problem was solved somewhere along the way.

Now I have a different problem. The total document is 47 pages long; the front matter is 6 pages long. I use roman numerals for the TOC and Preface; I restart with Arabic numerals on page 1 of chapter 1. However, the total number of pages does not reset to 41 at this point. It remains 47.

Therefore, the last page of the document says "Page 41 of 47."

Not good. Again, is there a way to fix this through the menus?

Thanks, everyone, very much.
