>From one of Gene's posts "Here in Silicon Valley, a writer ... typically
runs between $75 and $100 ... [and] less technical technical writer contract
rates are usually somewhere in the $40-$75 per hour range." So to correct
myself, it's $0-$55 per hour more in the Bay Area. That can pay for the
commute, but I still won't commute.

It varies by region. In North Central California, from my experience and
understanding, $40 per hour for a contract is a good rate. The San
Francisco Bay Area garners about $10-$15 more per hour, generally. I've
seen rates get to the low $20s per hour on DICE, depending on what the
employer knew about technical writing.

... $40/hour isn't the top of the scale for tech writing.
