TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My samples are posted in a private Yahoo group, accessible only by
invitation from me. I grant access for the active period of discussion,
then I remove it again.
I would not put any of them out there on an open website for just anybody to
see (or "borrow"). I'm starting to look at "member only" pages, where a
password allows members access to information that is not available to the
great unwashed lunatic fringe. This would be more convenient for those
potential employers who have not been familiar with Yahoo Groups and found
the process of signing up for the free service to be bothersome.
This in itself has been a very good clue that I would not be happy working
for folks who suffer from even more Luddite-ism than I do, and has saved me
from wasting more than a minimum of time talking to them.
I guess I'm getting crotchety in my old age. It's either that, or I've
reached that age where I realize I haven't got that much time left and I'm
less willing to squander it.
As for ethics, I don't post or share anything without having permission to
do so. When necessary, I spend my own time creating my own "samples of
work" for future marketing.
