In Tools/Options, go to the Edit tab. Select "Prompt to update style" and
deselect "Keep track of formatting". That'll get rid of every style in your
list that is just Normal with manual formatting. It doesn't help if they
actually applied styles.
Also, in Insert/Autotext/Autotext, deselect almost everything in the
AutoFormat and AutoFormat as You Type tabs, especially those that
automatically apply formatting. Those are the options that Word uses to try
(unsuccessfully) to read your mind. They cause more problems than they
solve.
With all of that done, you can see what styles are actually styles and not
just Word making up styles for manual formatting.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Re: MS Word Question -- about templates
Actually, I've been wanting to ask for some advice that's related to this
topic, specifically "best practices" for using the formatting styles in MS
Word. *Maybe* we could have a folder in the techwr-l archive on this matter,
if enough other people are interested.
I've learned Word OTJ, so to speak, and can make my documents (usually
200-300+ pages) behave reasonably well. I remember reading a post about
eliminating unused or unnecessary new styles that Word automatically adds to
the style list. Sometimes when I open older documents that have not been
looked at for many months, the formatting is messed up, probably due to
intuitive style changes taking over. (Customers receive PDFs, so this is
mainly my problem, unless someone else needs the Word file.) I've been
thinking that there should be a good protocol for cleaning up the styles
before the final version is PDF'd. Perhaps that would prevent the formatting
changes when I then open the document at a later date.
I hope that this isn't too much of a low-level, mechanical question, but
perhaps others would benefit from some advice.
Thanks,
Pat
