Just to force us into delayed gratification and keep us all from turning
into dirty little mercenaries to the point that anybody would notice, our
annual bonus is based on overall company performance and it goes into our
retirement portfolio. Not so good this year but in past years has been
higher than 10%. Only employees with a full year of service are eligible,
so I haven't worried about it yet.

At my last job, the quarterly bonus was based on meeting call-handling times
that were arbitrary and uncontrollable. If you were unlucky and got
complicated calls that took more time to unravel, you might provide
excellent customer service and write great reports but you lost out on the
bonus and couldn't make your rent that month. Lotsa fun.

It is so good to be back in my primary field again, where bonuses are found
money even if the company insists on making sure that I won't spend it all
in one place. At my age I should be saving for retirement and it's probably
a good thing that somebody is forcing me to do that. I do feel motivated to
move the company forward, and I do feel rewarded.

My boss is very, very smart. At my performance review he said -- twice --
that I'm a great technical writer and he feels that they're lucky to have
me.

In 25 years of some very good output, no boss has ever -- ever -- said that
before. This guy has got my extra effort and extra hours whenever he wants
them, and I don't plan to look anyplace else any time soon, and it didn't
cost him a thing.

They've also held several holiday luncheons, another one today to celebrate
a retiree's last day tomorrow. Compliments and food -- I'll count both of
those as a bonus!
