Microsoft has published a free Word 2003 add-in that claims to
automatically remove all hidden information from a file. You can read
more about this option at http://tinyurl.com/3u5tw

Some people prefer to remove hidden information manually. Dori's method
(cutting, pasting-as-text, and then reformatting everything) is very
straightforward. Other methods include removing tracked changes,
deleting or editing personal information in the file properties (with
the file *closed* -- and also note the Word option to "remove personal
information from file properties on save"), and back-converting from PDF
(which might also require some reformatting).

By the way, if you do have the opportunity to submit as PDF, don't
assume that your hidden information is safe! See "Redacting with
Confidence" at http://tinyurl.com/za26j
