The thing that bothered me the most was that he didn't include the cartoon in his paper :-)

As absurd as these papers seem to us, you have to give the author credit for knowing his audience and writing in a style that suits that audience. When so written, that writing will accomplish its goal - get a grade, a degree, a journal citation or publication - just as technical writing written properly for its audience will accomplish its goal.
