My posts take forever to actually show up on the list, so I'll probably
be joining the discussion late. But I wanted to say that I think both
the Interviewing and Management posts went off-topic. Maybe they didn't
start there, but they did end up there. The usefulness of the
information is irrelevant because this is a technical communications
list. If you want advice on HR or Management issues, you should seek
lists that focus on those topics.
Let me make my point another way. A few days ago I posted that the "What
is in your car" thread was way off-topic. And then, that same weekend, I
got stuck with my two young kids 50 miles from home, with a flat tire at
night with the temperature around 40 degrees F. And I didn't have a
blanket in my car, or a flashlight, or a GPS, or three days worth of
food, or whatever. So the information in the "What is in your car"
thread would have been extremely valuable to me. But value alone does
not make it an appropriate topic for the list.
I think for people like me and Mary, we've reached a point where we are
deciding whether the value of on-topic posts are outweighed by the
hassle of the off-topic posts. A lot of people have already left, and I
think it's appropriate to consider why this is going on.
Regards,
Gary
