Can't agree there. A compass has saved more than one lost hiker from
traveling in circles, with or without a map. And it's saved me from
spending hours driving around and in the wrong direction when I first
started taking "The Swamp" shortcuts -- both with no other application than
"North is that-a-way".

I've taught detailed Map Orienteering courses so I do agree that a compass
can be used for much more sophisticated applications. Getting un-lost isn't
usually sophisticated. ;-)
