One of the first things I learned during my sales days was if you don't ask
for the sale, you won't get it, and that there are many ways to ask for the
sale. The same is true when you interview for a job. You're selling
yourself and your ability to solve their problem. You don't have to come out
and say "Gimme the job," but if you don't ask for it someone else will and
you may be left sitting by the phone for the call that never comes. (There
are a lot of creative ways to ask for a sale without "asking for the sale."
You just gave up several hours of your life. You should tell the
interviewer(s) that you were sold on their company and the job offer.
You're not putting them on the spot, you're telling them that they didn't
waste their time calling you in.
As for those thank you notes...I use them to reinforced my strengths as they
apply to the position, my availability or my agreement to the pay
scale....whatever I think needs to be stressed to overcome everyone else
applying for the job. THey are short, to the point, and professional. They
aren't old fashioned or pushy, they're good marketing.
