I have made my own 72-hour kit, and keep it in the trunk of my car. It
contains enough food to satisfy me for three days -- none of which needs
to be cooked. In a dire emergency, I could make the food last for a week
or more.
My KIA came equipped with a first-aid kit in the trunk.
I also vote for OnStar if you plan on traveling into remote areas. Even
when no cell phone signal is available, you can reach OnStar. My son's
Saturn has a satellite phone built-in as well; the $200 a year or so he
spends is well worth it if you only use the service once.
