While not slang, the Kiwis of New Zealand do have a very interesting sense of pronunciation. I had been in the country for about a week when I went to a company meeting where some of our users introduced themselves and explained what they did and how they used the software we produced. On guy said - and I will lapse into an attempt at conveying the sound of the dialect " We make pit fud." Pit fud?? He was actually saying "pet food."

How this is sort of relevant ... the number between five and seven is pronounced "sex" and the word for gender is pronounced "six" ... that one took a bit of getting used to.

Although not in the same vein as misunderstood slang, the subject reminds me of something I was told
by Chinese national from Beijing. He said that "southern" Chinese (I don't remember the name he used
for the region) pronounce the number six in a way that most of the rest of China considers a very
naughty word (my friend was too shy to actually tell me what the word meant). Evidently, it's a very
widely known and very funny "quirk" of the people from the region.
