I would say the two most critical things to do during your first
few days (based on the assumption that your tech writing job
is in the SW field you previously worked in and you're not
documenting nuclear reactors or something unrelated):

1. Determine who within the company is the primary person
who will be judging the success of your efforts.

2. Get a clear picture of what that person is expecting of you.
