I've had a lot of success with a simple, open-ended question like,
"Would you prefer that I do this differently?"

Ironically, one of the first things you learn in sales is to ask "open ended
question." The reason is simple, they invite conversation (communication).
I've found that often the manager has as much apprehension talking to new
staff members as they do to him (her). Usually, when communication between
a manager and staff starts to flow, one of two things happen...you either
understand each other better and forge a more positive working relationship,
or you find out your new manager is really a bozo and it's time to move on.
Either way, communication allows you make an informed decision on your
future instead of operating in a vacuum based on unreliable assumptions.
