As you note, not everyone likes the term, so whether or not to use it depends on your audience and purpose. (Doesn't it always come down to that? <g>)

Engineers and development or marketing managers are perfectly at ease with the term, so it might be appropriate for them. Users of products could care less about functionality (they just want to know how to accomplish a task, not what functions a product has), so the question then becomes how to recast the words to focus on that need.

If neither of these situations fits the context for your question, please provide more details so we can come up with better suggestions.
