Fred -- yes, that's what I mean about the headers. The headers and footers that I put into my Word document disappear when I make the PDF using PDFMaker.
Dori -- I've not tried Nitro. I'll give it a try if they have a trial/demo version.
Mike -- Sounds like OpenOffice may have some of the issues I am trying to avoid -- I'll keep it in mind, though.
I've just downloaded the trial version of Acrobat 7.0 pro, and I'll see how that goes. It's expensive, though.
One of my colleagues suggests Scansoft's PDF Converter, but they don't have a trial version that I can find. Has anyone used that one?
I tried pdf995, but I couldn't get the button-on-Word-toolbar functionality to work. The support folks were very prompt, and the files that they told me I needed were in the directories where the files belong. The Word interface made space for the buttons in the toolbar, but the buttons weren't there, and clicking on the blank spaces where the buttons were supposed to be didn't work.
