When you guys are doing a job search, how do you
handle the matter of showing samples of previous work
if your previous work is proprietary content? I'm
trying to answer a job ad that says the employer wants
to see samples, but everything I've done for the past
8 years was all for the company's internal use only,
and is supposed to be confidential. At my present job
I even signed an agreement to that effect. Any advice
on what to do?

Have you tried asking your former employers for
permission to retain and show (but not necessarily
give) examples of your past work to prospective
employers? I've never had a company say no to
this request.

You might also try checking the websites of your
past employers and just googling the names of
the products you documented. You'd be surprised
at how much "proprietary information" can be downloaded from manufacturers' support sites, especially for things that have been discontinued
since you left the company. I've even seen some
of the things I've documented in the past, complete with all manuals, posted for sale on eBay.
