TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I still remember the detailed wave of stress* that washed over me when my
boss, beaming broadly, announced that he had convinced the VP to "promote"
me to "Documentation Specialist".
>From "Technical Editor".
With a salary increase of less than 25 cents per hour.
Wouldn't have been so bad if "Documentation Specialist" had not been my
title three years earlier. The title improvement had been their excuse
_then_ for being tightwads with the salary.
Of course I smiled and said thank you.
And found another (better) job within three months after six years with
these jokers.
I was young and stupid, and polite, and unwilling to risk big changes.
I have outlived every one of them and I no longer tolerate such stupidity.
Both of which I guess qualify me now as a Senior technical writer.
*Stress: that uncomfortable feeling when forced for the sake of propriety
or legality to refrain from beating the living sh** out of some numbskull
who really needs it.
