In how many leading roles have you seen Robert Redford, Robert Wagner,
Dustin Hoffman, or Robert DiNero lately? While I would agree with your
basic premise for "creative" writing in fiction or non-fiction,
technical writing and technical writers don't have agents and they must
deal with 20-something HR people who look at grey hair, such as mine,
with either disdain or skepticism.

Nah, it's all in the mind. If you can demonstrate the skills, maturity
and have clue, then age is not a problem.
Besides, older writers are better than younger writers, simply because
being a writer is like being an actor. The more theater, movies or TV
shows an actor has played in, the better they are considered to be as
actors. Same thing with writers. Acting and writing are amongst the few
job types where having done many gigs actually stands in favor.
Of course Human Resource types may not understand, but I find that
relaying the above to them, changes their perception in most cases.
