When I was a little older than your son is now, I used to edit my Dad's
grant proposals for NIH (organic chemistry, looking for NCI funding).
Obviously, there were lots of words that I had to skip over -- I was
mostly giving it the ol' Strunk & White. Anyway, he got some pretty good
editing for free.

One time when I was doing this, Dad mentioned that there was a dearth of
good writers at the many chemical journals that he subscribed to. He
suggested that I consider a career in technical writing. I scoffed at
the suggestion; it took about 20 years to discover that Dad was right
all along.
