I know very little about avaition, but to me this seemed like a rock-solid
case for integrated "help": Why don't they just paint the words "SHORT
RUNWAY" every few hundred feet on the short runways designed for
general-aviation only? Kind of like they paint "FIRE LANE" on city
streets, or "SCHOOL AHEAD."
Of course, this wouldn't replace the runway diagrams and notices -- those
would remain necessary and useful especially in cases of snow on the
ground -- but at least it would be a flashing red light to a pilot who
happened to be steering a jet onto the wrong runway.
