I disagree. However, it depends on how you do it. First, line up the
replacement position, but tell them you want to give three weeks
notice and give that notice to your currentg gig. Then, sit down with
your manager and outline why the new position is that much
better...and it has to be better by more than a tiny bit. Next, as
part of that discussion, outline the steps that you will take to
ensure the least amount of pain.
Look, no decent manager is going to penalize you for trying to better
yourself and it's about time that managers understand that the
downside to asking for writers at the lowest rate is that we will
jump when a decent rate comes along.
When I interview, I come out and explain that one of the reasons I
won't take a $30/hr gig is that I'd jump and don't want to put either
of us in that position.
Handle it professionaly and there will be a minimum of hard feelings.
