I tend to suddenly realize I haven't blinked for a while, and when I
finally do, my eyes burn. I'm not big into video games, but I do like a
few... and the same thing happens there.

Excellent thread, here's my non-humorous, logical take:

My supervisor used to drink five or six cans of diet Coke a day while
editing. Caffeinated soft drinks can dehydrate you fast, causing dry
mouth.

Most people sound out words while editing, read paragraphs to make sure
the words and sentences flow correctly. Actually, to read aloud (softly)
was the advice of one of my supervisors ( the same one who galloped cans
of cola.)

Dry mouth can result from certain medical conditions or medicines. Go
back 35 spaces for the co-pay.

If you are racing against time to deliver on deadline, stress might be a
culprit.

Try sugar-free chewing gum instead of other high-calorie alternatives,
take frequent breaks to visit the water hole, and take deep breaths.

And for heaven's sake, don't leave your mouth open. It makes you look
silly and any errant flying creatures may enter the cavernous structure
bringing offensive taste to your mouth (if the bad writing does not do
so already!)
