1) Tag the paragraph that contains the "Contents" heading
(and any other content you want to preserve through updates)
using a tag that does *NOT* have a name that ends in the
characters TOC. This is the suffix that FrameMaker automatically
adds to the tag names that you specify in the TOC Setup dialog
when it generates the entries for the TOC. When you update
an existing TOC, the very first thing that FrameMaker does is
delete all paragraphs whose tag names end with that suffix,
whether they were entries that FrameMaker itself generated
or paragraphs manually entered by the writer (such as your
title).

2) if you are not getting page numbers in the TOC, you have
not set up the "TOC" Reference Page in the TOC file correctly.
You are apparently missing the <$pagenum> building block in
the prototype paragraphs. Typically each of these prototypes
(one for each paragraph tag that you are picking up in your
TOC) should contain a <$paratext> building block and a
<$pagenum> building block separated by a tab character. And
of course you also have to set up the tab stop location and
tab leaders for each and every one of those ...TOC paragraph
formats in the Paragraph Catalog for your TOC file.

And you really should consider upgrading from v5.5 (I assume
it's actually 5.5.6, right?), particularly if you are using any
operating system more recent than Windows 2000 (also
assuming Windows rather than UNIX or Macintosh...), which
is the last Windows version for which FrameMaker is officially
supported. (And if you actually are using Windows 2000 or
something older, you neally need to update your OS, because
Win2K is no longer supported by Microsoft. Noo more security
patches, for example, which leaves you even more vulnerable
than usual to a variety of viruses and worms and trojan horses.)

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Can anyone tell me how to (1) get the word "Contents" to remain on the body page of a TOC, without being overwritten when the TOC is regen'd and (2) how to get the body page of a TOC to pull in the page numbers? I've got (I think) the variables on the reference page properly defined, but when I generate the TOC, the body page pulls in only the tagged paragraph, not the accompanying page numbers.

I can't seem to find anything this specific in the old FM help.
