Maybe, maybe not. I'm sure that employees who commute 50 miles a day factor the time and expense into their salary requirements in some way, either consciously or unconsciously,
but I wonder how many would actually be willing to give up
X % of their weekly salary in exchange for being able to work
from home Y days per week. It would be interesting to see
what the response from employees would be if their employer
were to make that offer.

Really? One way or another all companies pay their employees' commuting costs. Some make it explicit, in the form of subsidizing van pools or the use of mass transit; the rest do it implicitly in the form of paying people enough (based on their value to the company) to commute from X distance (lower paid, unskilled, more fungible workers tend to live nearer to the plant than senior executives).
