Yes, but when have you ever known a thread on Techwr-l to
stick narrowly to the subject of the original query? Just look
at the way the recent thread about letting customers do
document translation (which was originally a narrow question
about what file format to use to transfer the docs) spiraled
off into the weeds about liability issues, the decision-making
processes of the PTB and a bunch of war stories.

Besides, the original posting asked about the value of certification
relative to "securing a job or contract/subcontract in IT/IS related
positions, technical writing, website development and such".
That sure sounds like the endlessly rehashed issue of how/whether
to certify technical writers.

I think you're referring mostly to the threads about establishing a TW
certification. It appears, unless I misread, that he's talking about the
value of certifications in specific technical fields.
