I'd been thinking about this problem in the context
of saying something more individual and personal to
someone, or not bothering the whole list with something
meant only for one person's situation. In the case you
mention, though, the solution is much easier: in order
to avoid this sort of embarrassment, you could never
send unkind or unflattering mail at all and then
you wouldn't have to worry about the list settings.
