Thank you to all who responded ! For anyone curious: Donna's and
Gary's advice worked perfectly.

Just a minor addendum for the detail-oriented: the Find operation did find
and change individual pieces of text within tables, but as Gary points out,
it does not seem to find whole rows that are conditionalized. (I didn't
actually have any of these -- at least, not any that were conditioned with
the tag I was trying to get rid of -- but I tested it just because I
was curious, and as Gary's post suggests, Frame skips right over them.)

This helped me solve another, tangentially related mystery.
Specifically, for a day or two I'd been unable to delete another conditional
tag which, according to the Find operation, was not currently in
use. Still, whenever I tried to delete it, Frame presented a
dialog saying "Some text uses this only tag." Sure enough, it was applied to
a row in a table. I found it by changing the tag color and style to
something really funky so that I could find it quickly in my document (which
has a ton of tables).

thanks again !
Fiona

Another exception is that Find will not find table rows where conditional
text has been applied.
