Nearly the same thing occurred, successfully, in the market

been a plethora of proprietary standards for required power
supply voltages and for (analog at that time) signal levels.
The US DOD said, "We're not buying anything that does not
meet [some particular] mil-spec standard." The manufacturers
quickly turned to making all their equipment match the
standard.
