Richard Combs, responding to my curmudgeonly attack upon icons and toolbars, observed: <<Boy, are you going to hate Windows Vista and Office 12! :-)>>

Fortunately, I use a Mac <g>, and Office 12 probably won't be available for the Mac before I retire... we're still not expecting Office _2003_ before 2007, if then.

But yeah... I'm gonna hate 'em both. Unless Microsoft is smart enough to have learned from past mistakes (as if!) and allow users to choose between the new and old interfaces. One of the "rules" of interface design should always be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but if you suspect it's broke, at least let users choose between the old broken interface and the new one".

If the new interface is so damned good, nobody will use the old one. But if you guessed wrong, as Microsoft did in Word 2002/XP, then you don't screw up your power users for several years until they adapt. Or perhaps this was just a clever ploy to motivate users to upgrade to 2003?
