There are two possible ways to tell, if the site doesn't display a
warning that you are transferring to a secure site.

In the lower-right area of the status bar the padlock will indicated a
locked condition.

In the lower-left area of the status bar, the URL will denote

LQ: Sounds good, what you said. But there have been quite a few
commercial
file transfer services that have been mentioned so far (on this thread).
Is
there a simple way to tell whether a particular service is using https
and
not just http? Can you tell that they are using https from your browser?
Thanks.

...SSH or SFTP, always. Always. Yes because the files traverse an
encrypted tunnel but, more critically, so do your login credentials.

Re commercial services, same deal. Transfers *and* logins must take
place over HTTPS at a minimum. Must. If not, you must assume
they've been compromised, because you can't know that they haven't
been. Must Assume Compromise.FTP will bite you, eventually, and you
won't
even know...
