Subject: "+" sign in a navigation tree?

Kevin McGowan wondered: <<What would be the "proper" term for the plus sign used to collapse or expand the list in a navigation tree? Is it just "the plus sign"? or is there something better? One of my QA guys just asked me what it's called, and I couldn't even think of it.>>

Unless you're specifically writing the docs for a user-interface API, it's better to treat this as the object of the sentence rather than the subject: "Click the [+] to expand..."

If you do need to name it? I've always heard it called the "expansion" button. For one authoritative source for that name: http://research.microsoft.com/~marycz/scope.pdf
