I think using the period gives the eye a natural place to stop,
especially if you have lists of more than 9 steps. <Joke about 12 steps
deliberately left out here.>

On the other hand, it's hours of debate over stuff like this that in
reality make little difference that makes our engineer co-workers walk
away from us shaking their heads.
