research or can point me to any research that would indicate if using a
period with the enumerative symbol is better (or worse) than not using a
period?

--I think it's a question of consistency rather than research. Chicago 15 6.130 numbers the list, but it's an indented list, not like this one. If you strip the periods from the list, simply be consistent -- maybe make a note in the house style manual to that effect.
