TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Since InfoMapping uses this form, I am guessing that there is research
to support that, although I don't remember reading it.
The other interesting thing is, RoboHelp uses number styles with no
period as the default, and Microsoft uses the number with period. THAT
in itself, should tell us SOMETHING! :-)
I prefer no period after the number.

No research. No periods. Period. It's already marked by the hanging
indent (if not by a font or style change). You don't need the redundant
marking of a period. My opinion, backed up by that of lots of other
people, but I'd be surprised to find definitive research to prove it.
