I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do. If you mean having tables be
numbered as 1-1 for the first one in chapter 1 and 3-2 for the second one in
chapter 3, you should be able to use SEQ fields. Set up one sequence that
increments per chapter, and a second that increments per table or
figure. Use the /c switch with a SEQ field you don't want to increment (
i.e. for all the chapter number fields after the first one per
chapter). Use the /r switch on the first instance of the image/table number
in each chapter to reset it to 1.
Assuming that you call the chapter sequence chapter and the item sequence
item, the first label in a chapter would look like this: {SEQ chapter} -
{SEQ item/r 1}: My Item Title.
The second label in the chapter would look like this: {SEQ chapter /c} -
{SEQ item}: Another Item Title.
Look up SEQ in the Word help for more details.

Subject: numbering image/table captions with chapter numbers in ms
wordwithout using built-headings
Hi,
Was wondering if any one had devised a way to number image/table captions
with chapter numbers in MS Word without using built-headings. My documents
use completely custom headings and I do not want to modify the built-in MS
headings. If you were to use the built-in MS Word caption function (under
Insert > Reference) then your only options appear to be the built-in
headers. I've tried using field codes and all sorts of style
implementations. I'm also not interested in using section breaks (in case
that happens to be a solution). These are pretty large documents with all
sorts of custom-defined styles and etc. minimizing the use of things such
as
section breaks, and self-created paragraphs, etc. If you happen to have an
answer, I would be so very very very very happy! Yes, I say that with
that
much enthusiasm because right about now I'm starting to believe MS Word to
be my mortal enemy :p
Thank you so much!
pj
