Some additional points related to JPEGs, screen captures and display quality in PDFs:

* One may use a format other than JPEG in the source file, yet JPEG compression may be applied to the image data as part of the conversion to PDF (eg Distiller compression, when set to "Automatic").

* Likewise, an otherwise high-quality screen capture used in the source file may be degraded during the conversion to PDF due to downsampling

* Resizing a screen capture inevitably causes image distortion. Changing the zoom level when displaying a PDF effectively resizes the screen capture.
For an optimal display of bitmaps, a separate PDF ("image viewer") may be used, with a controlled default zoom level that is related to the dpi value in the authoring application. This default zoom level is restored, if changed, when the reader switches pages.
For an example, see http://www.microtype.com/showcase/text.pdf
The linked file -- http://www.microtype.com/showcase/screens.pdf -- takes into account the different display resolution of Acrobat/Reader 5 (and earlier, 72 dpi) vs. Acrobat/Reader 6 (and later, 96 dpi by default).

* JPEGs can be used in a controlled way without loss of quality.
A sample PDF with linked JPEG screen captures (captured with SnagIt), displayed in a floating window, is available at: http://www.microtype.com/showcase/MultimediaAsst/LinkedJPEG.pdf (76K, Acrobat/Reader 6 or higher required)
