I'm not going to weigh in on the specific "appears vs. displays" debate...

Generally, if you're writing for localization, you want to use
internationalized language that is free of slang, colloquialisms,
idioms, and such.

Regardless of which word you go with, the most important factor is
that it is used consistently in all cases. That will minimize
translation costs and ensure the same translation and meaning in all
cases. It may be consistently wrong, but dang it, it's consistent. ;-)
