It really depends on which "advantages" you are wanting. Bring it into PhotoShop and save it as a psd file, first. Then make your edits and save it out as a TIFF.
Depending on the information that was lost from the original JPG, you should be okay. Basically, information lost in the conversion from JPG to BMP stays lost but you might be able to recreate some of it in PS (like re-introducing the ICC profile, etc.)
