Yes, in some contexts. Has to do with alternate usage. Left may
have the sense of "leave"; right can suggest "correct" or be
mistaken for a noun -- as either term might be, in a political context.

Depending on the sentence, readers parsing quickly are left (heh)
slightly in doubt about "left" and "right", until context clears
things up. Slap "-hand" onto either one and all doubt is erased,
immediately.

Now, there might be a better sentence in the first place, and a
writer can certainly over-do it, but "-hand" is pretty efficient in
the right spot.
