Hi Beth,

It all depends on the tool chain you would like to switch to from Word. We
successfully use a single-source solution, namely Docbook XML. This allows
us to reuse information in different publications and automate building the
deliverables. I guess you produce PDFs as output files, as we do.
Docbook tool chain can be built based on open-source tools (an XML editor,
Docbook XSL stylesheets, and a converter to PDF, e.g. Apache FOP), so you do
not have to care much about the cost of the solution. Building the
deliverables can be easily automated, again using open-source tools (e.g.
Apache Ant). All you have to do is to invest some time to learn Docbook and
deploy the tool chain and automation.
