I've used InDesign, Word, and OpenOffice for large documentation
projects. By far, I prefer InDesign for styles and formatting, but the
spell checker is weaker. If you aren't doing much layout and document
design, I would recommend OpenOffice. I've done two projects using OO
and was quite pleased with the program. Each project was roughly 150
to 200 pages long and OO never crashed. Plus, the functionality of OO
is similar to Word, so there really isn't too big of a learning curve.
