Does anyone (in Windows) use a utility to auto-synchronize their files
between their desktop system and a network drive?
I just decided that that would be a useful thing to do (given how easily I
can be distracted from performing manual backups), and I googled a bit.
Other than Windows Briefcase (which is oriented more toward PC-to-PC synch,
and seems to require manual initiation of each synch operation), there
appear to be boatloads of utilities. I may be reading for a month, just to
sort 'em out. And that's just features. Then I'd have to discover which ones
are respected and enjoyed... versus the other kind.
To narrow the search, I'd appreciate hearing from people who are already
using something and are happy with it.
I've got a flaky hard disk and IT dept is taking their time about sending a
replacement (we're no longer allowed to stroll across to BestBuy, grab
something off the shelf and then expense it). At the same time, we've been
having network problems for the past few months ("growing" pains following
an office move and a consolidation of IT function in the USA -- our branch
office is in Canada). So, I want to just work on my RoboHelp projects or my
FrameMaker docs or my Word docs and save normally. As I do so, the magic
utility should ensure that a copy goes to my local hard disk (if it's in the
mood) and a copy goes to the network (if there's a working connection). If
one or the other repository has a problem, I should maybe get a warning
message, but I should be permitted to keep working - as long as I've got at
least one place accepting my data.
There should be no requirement for me to remember to invoke some
synchronizing operation.
The utility should not cause system slowdowns (I've got a 3.2 GHz machine
with 2GB memory) or lockouts. It should never lose or corrupt data.
What am I looking for?
How about search terms more specific than file synchronize and auto backup?
There's probably an obvious term I'm overlooking that would cut the Google
responses down to three perfect ones... (why yes, I do dream in color... why
do you ask? :-)
