On top of other good advice you've received, don't forget to take into account which one would be more fun or interesting or enlightening to write about (the one that's more interesting to you). Money isn't everything.

Based on your descriptions, I'd probably go the 1099 route and take advantage of the extra deductions, but mostly because it sounds more interesting. Of course, the oil companies are doing quite well these days. It could be a good time to jump in.
