Gus, Al - good points. I was using "content provider" in the sense of
literally providing content. And I used SME in the sense of the person
who writes the raw material. Raw material could be functional specs,
MRDs, drafts of marketing material, you name it. =)
My point was really that I was agreeing with the OP that a tech writer
does more than just "write". =) Content provider seems like such a
simplistic label.
Although... on the flip side... we call the big cable companies "cable
providers" or doctors are called "medical providers". I guess they do
more than just provide cable or medicine.
Claire - who really should be editing but is distracted.

I've been called a lot of things, including "content provider;"
however, it was a slash after Technical Writer and it referred to
providing content to the corporate website. This task was in addition
and subordinate to my primary function of creating user guides and
online Help.
