The great things about this field is that it provides a foundation for so many other things. There are times when just sitting in your cubicle and writing day after day is very welcome. I've moved into low-stress, low-demand positions after the insanity of a frenetic-cascade-of-deadlines position, and enjoyed the work greatly. Other times, I've gotten antsy at the routine and had to dive into something more demanding and uncertain. Dealing with patents may not be as thrilling as technical writing, but it can be attractive, interesting work. Any job that provides a living wage is what I like to do. :-)

On a recent visit to the Washington, D. C. area I met an old friend who
was a technical writer for 10 years. She lost her job two years ago and
reluctantly took a job as a patent secretary. She started at 60K. Today
she is earning 80K. She claims the work is much easier than technical
writing. She even mentioned that some top patent secretaries don't even
have college degrees.

I'm not in it for the money or the ease of work. They're perks, for
sure, but not at the expense of doing what I like to do.
